The ground matters here. Naenae's basin sits on old swamp deposits of silt, sand and peat, and early farmers fought boggy ground and flooding from the surrounding hills until streams were diverted into concrete channels in 1918. Part of the Waiwhetū Stream still runs in a concrete channel today. Water that overflows a gutter onto that kind of ground soaks in slowly or sits there, so every downpipe is flushed through to stormwater as part of the job.

Not every Naenae roof is old. The Star Flats block north of Naenae Road has a low-pitch roof that drains to outlets needing regular clearing, and the new state houses built in 2020 mostly need routine gutter care. Homes on the lower slopes of the Eastern Hills are more exposed to wind and leaf fall from the hillside, and access there is planned for the downhill side. Wherever the house sits, debris is bagged and taken away, and you receive photos of each run with notes on joints and brackets.
