The Hutt Valley has a long state housing history. Petone's Heretaunga Settlement of 1906 was New Zealand's first state housing, Naenae was built around 1,000 state houses in 1944, and in the late 1940s state housing suburbs spread along the eastern side of the valley from Waiwhetū to Taitā. Upper Hutt filled with subdivisions from 1947 through to the 1980s, Wainuiomata boomed in the 1950s, and Stokes Valley and Eastbourne add hillside and harbourside homes surrounded by bush.

The valley also gets more rain than central Wellington. Rainfall normals are about 1,206 mm a year at Gracefield in Lower Hutt and 1,268 mm at Wallaceville in Upper Hutt, against 957 mm at Wellington Airport, and the Wainuiomata Reservoir records about 1,800 mm. We size new spouting and downpipes to suit, quote tile to metal re-roofs on post-war homes, and fix roof leaks in the gutters and valleys that carry the most water.

Roofing Services in the Hutt Valley

Every other roofing service we offer in the Hutt Valley, and what each one covers:

  • Roof Replacement Hutt Valley: When repairs no longer make sense, we replace the roof completely and leave you with a roof that is good for decades.
  • Gutter Cleaning Hutt Valley: Gutters and downpipes cleared by hand, flushed and checked, with before and after photos of what we found.
  • Re-Roofing: A full re-roof replaces your old roofing, underlay and flashings with a new COLORSTEEL roof built to today's Building Code.
  • Tile to Metal Re-Roofing: Swapping heavy concrete tiles for lightweight steel removes weight from the frame and ends the cycle of cracked tiles and leaks.
  • Asbestos Roof Removal: Older Super Six and fibre cement roofs can contain asbestos.
  • Decramastic Roof: Decramastic tiles lose their chip coating and rust from the inside.
  • Roof Leak Repairs: We track a leak to its source, which is often nowhere near the stain on your ceiling, and fix the cause.
  • Emergency Roof Repairs: Storm damage made safe fast, then repaired with the photos and reports your insurer needs.
  • Tile Roof Repairs: Cracked and slipped tiles replaced, ridges rebedded and repointed, and leaks under tiles traced and sealed.
  • Roof Flashing Repairs: Flashings around chimneys, skylights, walls and valleys cause most leaks.
  • New Roofs: New roofs for new builds, extensions and minor dwellings, installed to plans and signed off for your Code Compliance Certificate.
  • Metal Roofing: Longrun COLORSTEEL roofing in corrugate and trapezoidal profiles, rolled to length for your roof.
  • Membrane Roofing: Flat and low-pitch roofs, decks and gutters waterproofed with butynol and modern membrane systems.
  • Skylights: Roof windows and skylights installed or replaced with proper flashing kits, so the light comes in and the water does not.
  • Downpipes and Fascia: Downpipes and fascia replaced or repaired, often alongside new spouting or a re-roof.
  • Roof Painting: Roof painting that starts with proper preparation: wash, treat, repair and prime, then two coats of roof paint.
  • Roof Cleaning: Moss, lichen and grime removed with the right treatment for your roof type, without damaging the surface.
  • Roof Inspections: A detailed roof report with photos and honest repair or replace advice, for owners, buyers and insurers.
  • Roof Ventilation: Roof and ceiling space ventilation that reduces condensation, mould and heat build-up.
  • Commercial Roofing: Re-roofs, repairs and maintenance plans for commercial, industrial and multi-unit buildings.

Common Roof Types in the Hutt Valley

The 1940s and 1950s state houses of Naenae, Taitā, Waterloo and Petone were built in large numbers to standard designs, and their roofs, underlay and spouting are now decades old. Upper Hutt's 1960s and 1970s subdivisions at Tōtara Park, Timberlea and Kingsley Heights can carry concrete tile or decramastic roofs that suit a change to steel. Petone and Naenae also have Star Flats apartment blocks with low-pitch roofs, Wainuiomata's newer townhouses add modern longrun roofs, and older villas around central Lower Hutt, Petone and Eastbourne traditionally have corrugated iron.

What the Hutt Valley Conditions Mean for Your Roof

Wainuiomata and the Hutt get noticeably more rain than the airport, so spouting capacity and downpipe placement matter. Eastbourne and the Petone foreshore are within 500 metres of the harbour, which NZS 3604 puts in the highest sea spray zone, so we confirm exposure with BRANZ Maps for those addresses. Stokes Valley, Wainuiomata and Eastbourne are surrounded by bush, which drops leaves into gutters and valleys. Wainuiomata's hills reduce local wind flow, while exposed sites on the valley sides and at Eastbourne take strong wind, so fixings are set by the wind zone for each site. Much of the valley floor is flood plain, so roof water should go into the stormwater system, not onto the ground beside the house.

Roofers Hutt Valley FAQs

Will my spouting cope with Hutt Valley rain?

Rainfall in the Hutt is higher than at Wellington Airport, and Wainuiomata is wetter again. Older spouting is often undersized or sagging, which shows as overflow in heavy rain. We check the spouting size, fall and downpipe outlets and quote a replacement only if the existing system cannot cope.

Can you re-roof a state house without changing its look?

Yes. Many state houses suit a corrugate or trapezoidal longrun profile in a colour close to the original. If your home is in a heritage area, such as the Heretaunga Settlement historic area in Petone, check any listing requirements first.

Is my Petone or Eastbourne home in a sea spray zone?

Homes within 500 metres of the sea, including the harbour, fall in the highest sea spray zone in NZS 3604, and breaking surf beachfronts are higher again. The boundary is hard to define, so we check your address with BRANZ Maps and match the steel grade and fixings to it.

Do you work in Wainuiomata and Stokes Valley as well as the main valley?

Yes. We cover the whole Hutt Valley, including Wainuiomata over the hill road, Stokes Valley, Eastbourne and Upper Hutt. The measure and written quote are free wherever you are.
