Before the Second World War, settlement in the lower Hutt Valley was concentrated around central Lower Hutt, Petone and Eastbourne. In the late 1940s new state housing suburbs spread along the eastern side of the valley from Waiwhetū to Taitā, and housing later climbed the western hills at Normandale and Kelson.

Lower Hutt sits on the lower flood plain of Te Awa Kairangi, the Hutt River, and the Wellington Fault forms the western edge of the valley, with its escarpment still visible at Hutt Central School. Rainfall at Gracefield is about 1,206 mm a year, well above Wellington Airport. The measure is free, and you get an itemised quote in writing.

Roofing Services in Lower Hutt

Every other roofing service we offer in Lower Hutt, and what each one covers:

  • Roof Replacement Lower Hutt: When repairs no longer make sense, we replace the roof completely and leave you with a roof that is good for decades.
  • Roof Cleaning Lower Hutt: Moss, lichen and grime removed with the right treatment for your roof type, without damaging the surface.
  • Re-Roofing: A full re-roof replaces your old roofing, underlay and flashings with a new COLORSTEEL roof built to today's Building Code.
  • Tile to Metal Re-Roofing: Swapping heavy concrete tiles for lightweight steel removes weight from the frame and ends the cycle of cracked tiles and leaks.
  • Asbestos Roof Removal: Older Super Six and fibre cement roofs can contain asbestos.
  • Decramastic Roof: Decramastic tiles lose their chip coating and rust from the inside.
  • Roof Leak Repairs: We track a leak to its source, which is often nowhere near the stain on your ceiling, and fix the cause.
  • Emergency Roof Repairs: Storm damage made safe fast, then repaired with the photos and reports your insurer needs.
  • Tile Roof Repairs: Cracked and slipped tiles replaced, ridges rebedded and repointed, and leaks under tiles traced and sealed.
  • Roof Flashing Repairs: Flashings around chimneys, skylights, walls and valleys cause most leaks.
  • New Roofs: New roofs for new builds, extensions and minor dwellings, installed to plans and signed off for your Code Compliance Certificate.
  • Metal Roofing: Longrun COLORSTEEL roofing in corrugate and trapezoidal profiles, rolled to length for your roof.
  • Membrane Roofing: Flat and low-pitch roofs, decks and gutters waterproofed with butynol and modern membrane systems.
  • Skylights: Roof windows and skylights installed or replaced with proper flashing kits, so the light comes in and the water does not.
  • Spouting and Gutters: New spouting, gutter replacement and repairs in steel and PVC, sized to carry heavy downpours.
  • Gutter Cleaning: Gutters and downpipes cleared by hand, flushed and checked, with before and after photos of what we found.
  • Downpipes and Fascia: Downpipes and fascia replaced or repaired, often alongside new spouting or a re-roof.
  • Roof Inspections: A detailed roof report with photos and honest repair or replace advice, for owners, buyers and insurers.
  • Roof Ventilation: Roof and ceiling space ventilation that reduces condensation, mould and heat build-up.
  • Commercial Roofing: Re-roofs, repairs and maintenance plans for commercial, industrial and multi-unit buildings.

Lower Hutt Homes and Their Roofs

Lower Hutt's post-war state houses from Waiwhetū to Taitā were built in large numbers, and their roofs and spouting are now decades old. Waterloo mixes state and private housing, central Lower Hutt has older villas and bungalows with corrugated iron roofs, and the western hill suburbs of Normandale and Kelson add homes with tile, decramastic or longrun roofs on sloping sites.

What Lower Hutt Conditions Mean for Your Roof

The valley gets more rain than Wellington city, so spouting needs to be sized for heavy downpours and downpipes connected to stormwater. The Hutt River burst its banks in 1985 and the threat of flooding from heavy rain persists, which makes roof water management worth getting right on the valley floor. Homes on the western hills are more exposed to wind, and fixings need to suit the NZS 3604 wind zone for the site.

Roofers Lower Hutt FAQs

Will my spouting cope with Lower Hutt rain?

Older spouting can be undersized or sagging, which shows as overflow in heavy rain. We check size, fall and outlets and recommend replacement only where the system cannot cope.

Do you re-roof Waterloo and Taitā state houses?

Yes. We replace tile and iron roofs on state houses with COLORSTEEL, including new underlay and flashings, and test for asbestos first on fibre cement roofs.

Can you work on steep Normandale and Kelson sections?

Yes. We plan scaffolding and access during the free measure and show it as a separate line on the quote.

Who looks after the stormwater pipe from my downpipe?

Private drains on your property are generally the owner's responsibility. Downpipes must connect to stormwater, not wastewater. We check downpipe connections and can point you to a drainlayer for faults underground.
