A freshly painted roof changes the look of a the Hutt Valley home more than almost anything else for the cost. We help you choose a colour that suits the house and the street, and we check whether the roof's age and material make painting the right choice before we quote.
Hutt Valley roof repaints: what changes between Petone, Naenae, Stokes Valley and Eastbourne
Roof painting across the Hutt Valley means working in four quite different settings. Petone and Eastbourne sit on the harbour edge, where salt builds up on roofs and the high corrosion zone takes in the foreshore. A repaint there starts with a thorough fresh-water wash, then rust at the laps and fixings is treated and primed before any colour goes on. Older villas around Petone and Eastbourne usually have corrugated iron, and the undersides of laps and ridge caps are where salt hides.
Naenae and the eastern state housing suburbs are mostly standard 1940s designs whose iron or tile roofs have been in place for many decades. Plenty are good painting candidates, but on some the iron has rusted through at the laps, and we would rather say so than coat over it. Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata are ringed by bush, so moss and lichen are the main preparation task, and shaded roof faces take longer to dry out after a wash. Wainuiomata's newer townhouses are the exception, with roofs that mostly need washing rather than paint.
Rain is the common thread. Gracefield, Wallaceville and the Wainuiomata reservoir all record more rain than Wellington Airport, and each coat needs dry weather to cure, so Hutt Valley repaints are booked against settled forecasts rather than fixed dates. Much of the valley floor is flood plain, so wash water from roof preparation goes to stormwater.
Local tip: Have the spouting emptied during preparation, because a blocked gutter can spill water back over a newly painted edge.
Roof Painting in the Hutt Valley: Local Conditions
In the Hutt Valley we paint iron and tile roofs on post-war state houses and the 1960s and 1970s homes of Upper Hutt and Stokes Valley. The valley's higher rainfall means waiting for a proper dry spell, and older decramastic is tested for asbestos first.
Roofs in the Hutt Valley
The 1940s and 1950s state houses of Naenae, Taitā, Waterloo and Petone were built in large numbers to standard designs, and their roofs, underlay and spouting are now decades old. Upper Hutt's 1960s and 1970s subdivisions at Tōtara Park, Timberlea and Kingsley Heights can carry concrete tile or decramastic roofs that suit a change to steel. Petone and Naenae also have Star Flats apartment blocks with low-pitch roofs, Wainuiomata's newer townhouses add modern longrun roofs, and older villas around central Lower Hutt, Petone and Eastbourne traditionally have corrugated iron.

Roof Painting Hutt Valley FAQs
Is a Hutt Valley roof harder to paint than one in the city?
Not harder, but slower to schedule. More rain means fewer suitable days, and the coastal and bush suburbs each add their own preparation. We set realistic dates in the quote and adjust to the forecast.
How long does roof painting take in the Hutt Valley?
It depends on the roof size, condition and weather. Preparation and drying time between coats take longer than the painting itself, and we only paint in suitable conditions. The quote gives you a planned timeframe.
What colours can I choose?
Roof paints come in a wide range of colours, including shades close to the standard COLORSTEEL range. Lighter colours reflect more heat and darker ones absorb more. Always check a physical sample in daylight before deciding.
