Gutter Cleaning Paremata

Paremata and Papakōwhai: different gutter jobs either side of the bridges

Paremata grew as a seaside suburb after the road bridge crossed the entrance to the Pāuatahanui Inlet in 1936. Its lower streets near the Ngatitoa Domain and the water have homes from that era onward, some with corrugated iron roofs, and sites within 500 metres of the harbour or 100 metres of the inlet sit in the highest sea spray zone. Gutters there collect salt as well as leaves, so they are rinsed after clearing to keep salty sludge off the steel.

Papakōwhai, on the hills to the south, is newer and quite different. Homes there often have complex rooflines with several valleys and internal corners, and they need gutter and spouting maintenance far more than roof replacement. The hillside sites are exposed to wind, which carries leaves from gardens and slopes onto the roof and into the valleys. Newer homes can also have smaller outlets, which block with less debris than the wide outlets on older spouting. We clear each valley and outlet, then flush every downpipe.

On the hill, the downhill side of a house can be much taller than the street side, so access is chosen for that side before we start. On the lower streets, the ground is flatter but the wind off the harbour still pushes rain along the gutters. Either way, debris is bagged and removed so none of it is washed into the inlet. Before and after photos are sent once the job is done.

Local tip: In Papakōwhai, clear the valleys as well as the gutters, because complex rooflines hold leaves in the corners.
